The breeding farm

The birds, now called pullets, are transferred to the breeding farms when they are 18 weeks old.

At 22 weeks of age the pullets mix with cockerels (or roosters) and begin to lay eggs. The pullets lay the eggs in nest boxes which have been raised above the floor.

The eggs are then transported by a conveyor belt to an area where they are collected. Workers select the eggs by looking at the weight, shape, shell quality and cleanliness of the eggs.

Trays of eggs are placed onto trolleys and moved to a hatching egg store, where they are kept at 16°C. Trolleys are collected and transported to hatcheries twice a week.

The amount of food eaten by the chickens and the number of eggs laid is recorded daily to make sure the birds are healthy.
