Childhood obesity: How much is food education in schools part of the solution? (Scotland)

Join us for this regional conference tackling the importance of childhood obesity and food education in Scotland.


This conference is one of a series around the UK and is aimed at teachers in primary and secondary schools in Scotland.

Each conference tackles the importance of childhood obesity, which has been raised further as an issue since lockdown. The conferences will be presented through inter-related presentations, focusing on key themes of obesity, curriculum, whole school, qualifications, food supply and, teaching and learning.
While the context is childhood obesity, it is also very much about the ‘here and now’, the challenges presented by Covid-19, but also the green shoots of opportunity. The sessions will be of interest to colleagues involved in food and nutrition education from primary through to secondary phases*. Each event will have a regional flavour.

The event is FREE to attend – the cost of this event is fully subsidised by FFL. As the events are virtual, please bring your own refreshments!

*There are some presentations on secondary school food teaching/qualifications, which may not be appropriate to primary colleagues.

What will be covered?

There will be a series of key inter-related presentations on the day, with a Q&A session, including:

  • Childhood obesity in the UK: Context, Covid-19, reality and the future. Alex White, Nutrition Scientist, British Nutrition Foundation
  • Curriculum perspective: Ann Floyd HMIe, Education Scotland, plus a teacher perspective from Isla Porteous
  • Whole school perspective: Jayne Jones, Argyll and Bute Council and speaker from Education Scotland (TBC)
  • Qualifications: SQA update, Graeme Findley
  • Insight: What we buy and eat: learnings from lockdown and opportunities for the future? Speaker TBC
  • Resources and training to support teaching and learning - Frances Meek, Senior Education Officer, British Nutrition Foundation
