Here you will find resources, using food as a context, to enhance your current curriculum resources and help pupils use their knowledge in a cross-curricular way. Alternatively, the resources can be used as part of extra-curricular activities, such as drop-down days or STEM clubs.
We have planned and written a series of ‘science packs’ which cover a range of science principles (in the context of food). The ‘packs’ are PowerPoint presentations which provide information and stimulus for the pupils about the particular principle and then more detailed support for teachers, along with links to resources to use in the classroom. They have been written with the support of a practising science teacher so provide guidance around planning, setting up and managing lessons using food as a context. There are also prompt sheets, worksheets and homework tasks.
Resources include ‘packs’ around:
- An introduction to nutrition
- Food tests
- Digestion
- Diabetes
- States of matter
- Coronary heart disease
- Testing for pH
- Food as fuel
- Unhealthy diets
- Onion cells - using a microscope
- Energy practical
- Caramelisation of onions
Plus, resources around:
There is also a new comprehensive Key terms and definitions resource for teachers and pupils.
You might also find the resources in the food and nutrition area useful, along with case studies and interviews to encourage pupils to consider using their science knowledge as a future career choice. Activities to engage with parents around the science of food can be found in the resources for food teachers area.
For more resources for teaching and learning around the science of food, explore the 11-14 years Cooking and 14-16 years Food science sections.
